The Summerton Mansion

unnamed (2).jpg

Built in 1850, the 168 year old mansion sat on the corner of Levels Rd and U.S. 301 in Middletown, Delaware. The mansion was part of the Cochran Family's dwellings which included Hedgelawn (burned), and the Charles Cochran House. The mansion was built for John P. Cochran, wealthy landowner and Delaware's 43rd governor. Rather than mirroring other Cochran properties peach plantings, Summerton's land cropped mixed farming, with wheat, corn, and potatoes. After a year-long battle, Summerton was finally destroyed in September 2016. A Royal Farms convenience store now sits in its place.
