This is a contemporary piece depicting the flame and cross, the symbol of the United Methodist Church. Technically, it is not an abstract piece, as it is a symbolic religious metal sculpture. The flame is painted red and the cross is painted black. The cross is comprised of angular steel pieces welded together. The flame is sheet steel, cut and shaped so as to appear as a flame and give it a 3 dimensional appearance. The base was once used to support a flagpole for the Post Office. The pole was removed from the sculpture. It is round on the bottom, and curves to support a round disk which, in turn, supports an octagonal pedestal for the sculpture. The pedestal has stars on each side set in a circle. The base is concrete and is missing mortar from several of the joints, probably from water erosion. The piece would benefit from restoration. Surveyed 10/2000 - Treatment needed. The paint is in good condition. Visible guano on the back of the flame. The base is missing mortar in some joints, possible from usage, from sitting on top of the base which is used as a chair. Granular surface visible on the base, possible from water erosion. Subject/theme: Emblem of a cross with two large flame curves up the proper right side of the cross, extending from the bottom to the top.

The weathervane is under the silhouetted figures. The light gray piece has male and female figures with larger cat on PR. The figures hold hands. The female figure holds something in her hand and stands nearest to the larger cat. This piece is attached to a wooden base which is nailed to a tree trunk. The metal pieces are finished with galvanized paint in "battleship gray". The number of coats of paint is unknown but the artist guesses "about three". Rust appears on much of the piece but especially on the metal figures. The bottom of the "E" of "East" is missing and now looks more like an "F", the weathervane is tilted (not on purpose).

The Book is in great need of repair and the memorial park which was commissioned is no longer there. Because there is no longer any distinguishing characteristics of the park or the sculpture, the students, staff, and faculty have no knowledge of this memorial. The theme is a memorial to Joy Cottrell, a former nursing teacher and first graduate of D.S.C. school of nursing. The entire sculpture needs to be cleaned, waxed, and re-engraved. There is engraving on the open book which sets upon a long pedestal. It cannot be read. Visible guano and metallic staining on the sculpture and the base. Exposed armature at the base. Pitting and metallic staining on the sculpture and its base. Obvious water collection in recessed areas.
