Delaware’s Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program was re-authorized for an additional ten years starting in July, 2010.
For ten years, Delawareans have enjoyed the benefits of the Delaware Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program. Developers, small businesses and owners of historic homes have utilized the credits to rehab their buildings. This rehabilitation has served to greatly revitalize communities throughout the First State. An estimated 2,400 jobs, many of them local, have been created by the program which has leveraged more than $166 million in private-sector rehabilitation in the last ten years.
The program assists property owners in the preservation of historic buildings and encourages reinvestment in existing communities by providing Delaware income tax credits for the substantial rehabilitation of National Register of Historic Places listed properties.
The program provides for a reduction in state income tax equal to a percentage of the monies expended in rehabilitating the historic property. With the exception of an owner’s private residence, generally, properties which qualify for the state income tax credit also quality for the federal income tax credit for historic preservation.
- Beginning in July 2010, the State of Delaware has set aside $2,000,000 annually specifically for individuals and small business owners for the tax credit program.
- The entire program is funded to $5,000,000 annually.
- The tax credits can be transferred, sold or assigned to anyone with Delaware income tax or franchise tax liability.
