Thanks to a grant from the State Historic Preservation Office, Preservation Delaware was able to hire Rhonda Powell-Sargeant to create a presentation to promote the State’s Historic Preservation Tax Credit program. Rhonda worked with me this semester as an intern to develop this introductory presentation geared for historic property owners and managers across the state unfamiliar with the program. Check out a teaser for the tax credit program by clicking here. Congratulations to Rhonda on completing her degree. With all requirements satisfied, she will graduate on May 20th with a M.A. in Historic Preservation.

More on the project: As part of the tax credit promotion project, Preservation Delaware devised and distributed a survey to previous users of the Delaware Historic Preservation tax credits to find out what they thought of the process. Two of the strongest conclusions from the survey were that former users would recommend the program to others for the benefits received and that Joan Larrivee of the State Historic Preservation Office provides excellent help to guide applicants through the process.

Looking for Venues: Already given to the Hockessin Rotary by PDI Director Terry Graham and at the Lewes Historical Society’s event, Restoration Destination: Delmarva’s Preservation and Home Builder’s Expo, Preservation Delaware asking groups in communities with National Register listed historic properties if they would like us to present a brief 20 minute presentation to their membership. If you know of a group that would be a good candidate for us to come speak to, please contact me at fieldrep@preservationde.org or contact the PDI office at 302-322-7900. Look for us at a meeting near you!

According to the article on the front page of this morning’s News Journal, there is good news to report for Hockessin School 107C. The construction debt has been paid and the building is no longer in jeopardy of public auction. While many details about the future of the property need to be worked out, the immediate threat is passed. Thanks to the leadership of Leonard Williams and Joshua Martin, those who value the preservation of our heritage can breathe a sigh of relief. While very positive, this is only the first step in a long process to get this important historic building on to a stable path for the future. Help is still needed! Donations can still be made to The Friends of Hockessin Colored School 107c through the Delaware Community Foundation on the web at www.delcf.org. To see the article on line, follow the link: http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20120329/NEWS/203290329/Group-saves-piece-civil-rights-history-from-auction-block?odyssey=tab|topnews|img|Home&nclick_check=1
