Preservation Delaware: Protecting the Irreplaceable in the First State

About PDI

our mission

We Educate

  • Educational programs include conferences, workshops, publications, tours, and a resource lending library.

We Effect Change

  •  Public policy initiatives are undertaken on the local, state, and federal level, building support for incentives and policy changes that will promote a preservation ethic throughout the state, promoting the incorporation of an historic preservation component in land use planning and private development, and fostering the concept that preservation is an essential element in economic development and community revitalization activities.

We Provide Support

  •  by acting as a facilitator and providing technical assistance to individuals, local organizations, groups, government agencies and businesses in their efforts to preserve historic sites.
  • by providing financial support through the First State Preservation Revolving Fund, which provides grants and low-interest loans for preservation projects, and provides funding to protect endangered historic resources.
  • by sponsoring the annual statewide Preservation Honor Awards program.

We Get Involved

  • PDI is actively involved in preservation projects though a preservation easement program and real estate projects, such as the Gibraltar project - a unique public/private collaboration that has protected this historic urban estate in Wilmington and provided public access to this once private property.

We Have Fun

  • PDI hosts special events, open houses, and tours at unique historic properties rarely open to the public.

We are involved in projects ranging from individual buildings, historic towns, rural farmland protection, urban neighborhoods and community redevelopment, archaeology, scenic landscapes and roadways, parks and open space, downtowns and economic development. In short, any site with historic ties contributing to our cultural identity and linking us with lives and sites that have gone before is worthy of Preservation Delaware's attention. Preserving these properties for ourselves and for future generations is a responsibility that cannot be ignored.
