Mission Statement

Preservation Delaware, Inc. is the statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of Delaware’s architectural heritage and historic settings through education, public policy initiatives and technical assistance.

Background and Milestones

Founded in 1993 by a group of individuals with a shared vision, Preservation Delaware, Inc. (PDI) is a statewide organization dedicated to protecting the architectural heritage and historic settings of Delaware.

The organization’s original goals were similar to most other community based preservation organizations and included education programs, outreach and advocacy. Primary to the founders’ original vision was the establishment of a preservation revolving fund that would allow PDI to intervene to save threatened properties or to provide incentives for preservation-minded property owners.

In the years since its founding, PDI has realized a number of accomplishments.

In addition to sponsoring conferences and educational workshops, launching an interactive website and advocating to ensure the Historic Preservation Tax Credit program (2001) and the re-authorization of the program for an additional ten years (2010), Preservation Delaware is developing a series of programs for members of historic preservation commissions, as well as launching hands-on workshops designed to teach participants the “how-to” of different rehabilitation skills used in preservation.

In 1997, Preservation Delaware, Inc. acquired the Gibraltar estate in Wilmington, and the accompanying Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar. Owned by the Sharp family, Gibraltar features a large estate house and a premier example of the garden design by pioneer female landscape architect, Marian Coffin. After many years of searching for a workable solution to the adaptive reuse of the mansion, Preservation Delaware and Gibraltar Preservation Group concluded the disposition of Gibraltar. GPG plans an extensive and historically appropriate adaptive reuse.
